Look at your list of similarities and differences between the book and the movie W of Oz. Organize your list into what you feel are the most important similarities and difference (see graphic organizer). After organizing your list, choose 3 similarities and 3 differences that you would like to talk about in your writing. ALL STUDENTS WILL COMPLETE THIS ASSIGNMENT.
Choose one of the following projects to complete as an individual or group.
- Create a map charting Dorothy’s journey from her home in Kansas and back again. Requirements-
o Your map should have 15-20 important events from the text.
o Your events should be listed in the order in which they occur.
o Your events should be from the beginning, middle and end of the novel.
o Your map should be easy to follow.
o Your map should contain at least 5 illustrations.
o Your map should be neat and colorful.
o Your map does not need to be geographically accurate, but it should contain landmarks.
o This map can be a “paper” map or you can locate an interactive program to create your map online…
- What a difference bones make! Build a life-sized Scarecrow to learn the skeletal system and how it makes our bodies work. Make sure to allow the joints to move…
- Research how a hot-air balloon works. Present the science behind the hot-air balloon. Build a small scale hot-air balloon to present with your project.
- Write your own original Oz adventures. You can even make yourselves the main characters! How did they get there? Who did they meet? What problems did they encounter? How did they get home? Remember the Hero’s Journey as you are writing.
- Draw, sculpt, make a collage, mask, oversize cutout, etc… of the Oz characters and places.
- Use the descriptions provided in the book and create illustrations of some of the characters. If you choose this you must illustrate 3-5 characters and provide the written description from the book.
